Kandanos War Memorial

It doesn’t happen often that in time of war the authors of a massacre erect gravestones to remember their misdeeds.
And it happens even less that once peace has come, the victims of that massacre (the people of Kandanos) leave those gravestones standing, almost without comment, to let the events that took place, so to speak, "tell for themselves".
This is precisely what happens in this Kandanos square, to remind the insiders of that tragic episode.
But the stranger needs some additional information to understand what actually happened, and to put the events in the right light. He/she will so learn about the Kandanos’ tenacious resistance to the Wehrmacht’s iattack, and about its frightening reaction, which has never seen a real sanction (the local commander of the Wehrmacht, Kurt Student, suffered perhaps just one year in prison after the war).
