Not to be missed

Very varied and extremely interesting collection displayed on 2 levels. Went there twice, at the beginning and at the end of my stay. In fact the first time I only had 1 hr that for me was not enough, especially to admire and read about the frescos in the basement.
A visit is highly recommended!

Quick stop

Nice museum with a bit of local history. The exhibits featured art & pottery. $6 Euros for my friend and I, not a very large space but something to do if you’re in the city. The art was educational and interesting.

An awesome museum--and a humbling experience

After a wonderful visit to Akrotiri (with an onsite archeologist guide), no one should miss this fabulous museum, where treasures still being found at the 17th-century B.C. site are brilliantly displayed. From early bronze-age bath-tubs, storage vessels, and frying pans to still-colourful "modernist" frescoes, this museum helped us imagine the vibrant life of a prehistoric urban civilisation not much less sophisticated than our own--suddenly swept away in the gigantic volcanic explosion that blew the top off the island and created the Caldera.

FANTASTIC Museum is open

The museum is open now (20th October 2021) so don’t believe the TripAdvisor headline. Believe it is open everyday except Tuesday, but it closes early at 3:30pm so get there before 2pm as there is a lot to see. No queues experienced. Costs 6euro for a mind-blowing experience of how advanced life was 19 centuries ago, far older than Stonehenge, the Egyptian pyramids, and makes the Romans seem modern. Went to the excavation at Akrotiri by bus from Fira (1.8euro) in the morning of the same day. Cost 12euro entrance. There is a cheap combined ticket for these and 3 other museums if you want. Don’t forget to take your Covid passport or you won’t get in to any museum.

A must visit

Well laid out, lots of info and also careful how many they let in at a time to spread people around. His is not only good in these Covid times but also in general as not everybody crowding around the same objects. They have many fantastic exhibits and don’t miss out on downstairs. This was not signposted but contained lots of wall art.

A little confusion but it was very pleasing to see!

After our visit to the THE ANCIENT BURIED CITY OF AKROTIRI, we felt that the next natural step was to visit the Museum Prehistoric Thira, mainly to see the wonderful wall art. There are actually two museums in Thira the other being the Archaeological Museum of Thera (which is currently closed) . I am unsure why this museum has the title "prehistoric" as the artifacts are mainly from the Bronze Age. With that said it is well worth a visit. You will need to provide proof of your double jabs or else you will not be able to buy the 6 Euro ticket to enter. Do not make the mistake like we did of missing the basement. As has been said by "Piperdave" as there is no signage. This needs to be improved hence 4 stars.

Great museums

This museum isn’t big, but it is easy to understand why it is considered to be one of the most important in the entire world!! So many fantastic artifacts, mainly from Akrotiri, are exhibited here and I can’t see enough of it. I have been there 30 times and spend an hour everytime I go to Santorini! It is important though to understand that Museum of Prehistoric Thera and Archeological Museum are two COMPLETELY different museums so You don’t get them mixed up!!! Museum of Prehistoric Thera is the one located between Bus Station and Ortodox Cathedral, and Archeological Museum is the one at the Square right next to Cable Car.

A must see - don’t miss the basement!

It was a treat to see all the major finds from Akrotiri under one roof in a spacious modern museum. The Minoan culture deserves to be more widely celebrated. The bronze age frescos are incredible and bring to life a hitherto forgotten world until recently buried under the lava. It demonstrates how even an advanced culture can be wiped from history by an act of nature.

The museum should make it clear there are two floors, the basement being easily missed as there is no signage to guide people there.
